Homeschooling in DoD & OCONUS Communities
Homeschooling is a legal educational option for many military families navigating life across both stateside and overseas duty stations. For some families, homeschooling offers flexibility during PCS transitions, support for individualized learning needs, continuity between moves, or an alternative educational pathway that better fits their child and family circumstances.
DoD-connected families may homeschool while living in CONUS or OCONUS communities, including during command-sponsored overseas assignments. Depending on location, families may also encounter varying levels of access to educational resources, extracurricular opportunities, special education supports, School Liaison Officers, and community-based homeschool networks. Because homeschooling laws, policies, and available supports differ across states, countries, and military installations, understanding both legal requirements and local community structures can play an important role in successful educational planning.
This section of STRIDE provides information and resources to help military families better understand homeschooling within DoD-connected communities, including educational continuity during PCS moves, OCONUS considerations, special education and homeschool topics, policy awareness, and practical guidance for navigating homeschooling across a variety of locations and educational environments.
